Christ in the Writings of St Francis

This Module considers, with recourse to the writings of St Francis, basic Christological suppositions arising from his intuitive insight. It includes reference to important illustrative pericopes from Scripture. Francis’ understanding of Christ wil be situated within the context of the cultural and religious milieu of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, which will be seen to be foundational to the formation of his Christology in particular and Franciscan Christology more generally. The Module comprises a general introduction to key aspects of Francis’ Christology followed by critical study of four of his writings: the Testament, the Rule of 1223, the Admonitions and the Praises.

Duration: 20 hours, comprising one 2-hour session per week over a ten week term.
